HomeTechnical Support:  Windows 95 / 98 / NT Connection Setup

If you do not understand the steps listed below, just click on the step you are on for a full color screen shot.

Open your Control Panel:  Click your Start button, choose 'Settings' and then select 'Control Panel.

From inside your Control Panel, find the 'Internet Options' icon and open it by double-clicking the icon.

You will now see the 'Internet Options' window.  The first thing you need to do is set your homepage to Savy2k, so in the box labeled 'Address', erase whatever is there and fill in the following:  http://www.savy2k.net .  Then press the 'Apply' button.

There will be many different tabs on the top of the 'Internet Options' window, choose the 'Connections' tab and press the 'Setup' button.

Now you will see the Internet Connection Wizard window with 3 options.  Make sure the option 'I want to set up my internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network' is selected by clicking on the radio button next to it (this will put a black dot inside of the circle) and click the 'Next' button.  NOTE:  This window may not have the 'I want to set up my internet connection manually' option, it may have a different set of options.  If this is the case, then choose the second option from the top and then click the 'Next' button.

Depending on your version of Windows and Internet Explorer, you may come across a different window right here.  If you do, respond to it the best you can and hit the 'Next' button, then  continue to the next step.

The next window will ask 'How do you connect to the internet?'.  Make sure 'I connect through a phone line and a modem' is selected and click the 'Next' button.

Now you need to put your dial-up number in the 'telephone number' field.  This is provided to you at time of account setup, and differs according to your location.  Entering a number not local to your area can result in long distance charges on your phone bill, so please make sure the number is the local area number we provided you with.  Press the 'Next' button when the information is filled in.

You will now see 2 white boxes, one for your username and one for your password.  This is for the username and password that you set up with us on the phone.  Enter your Savy2k username in the username box, and enter your password in the password box.  Be very careful when entering your password, as you will only see ***** when you type it in.  Press the 'Next' button when the information is filled in.

The next window will ask you for a connection name.  We recommend calling this  'Savy2k' with your city name next to it, for example:  If you live in Hanford, we would recommend calling the connection 'Savy2k Hanford'.  Press the 'Next' button when the information is filled in.

You are now done with the Dial-Up portion.  The next portion will cover using the wizard to set up your Outlook Express email.

If you would now like to configure Outlook Express to send and receive your Savy2k email, choose 'Yes' when it asks you, "Do you want to set up an Internet Mail account now?" and click the 'Next' button.

(Note: This screen may or may not be next for you.  If you do not have this option then please skip to the following step).  Choose 'Create a new Internet Mail' account and click the 'Next' button.

It will now ask you for a Display Name.  Fill in your name here as you would like it to show to people receiving mail from you.  For example, if you put "John Smith" in this box, when you send email to anybody they will see it as being from a "John Smith".  This is how people know who their email is from.  Fill this in accordingly and press the 'Next' button.

Now you need to fill in your email address.  Your email address is your username@savy2k.net .  For example, if your username is 'johndoe123' then your Email address would be ' johndoe123@savy2k.net ' .  Press the 'Next' button when the information is filled in.

You will now see 2 boxes, 1 for 'Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server' and one for 'Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server'.  For the Incoming Mail box, enter the following:  mail.savy2k.net

For the Outgoing Mail box, enter the following:  smtp.savy2k.net

Make sure 'My incoming mail server is a _____ server' is set to 'POP3'.

Now, please double check to make sure the incoming and outgoing mail server information is entered correctly.  One small mistake will prevent you from being able to send or receive your email properly.  When that information is all correct, please press the 'Next' button.

The next screen needs your username and password again, so please enter it just as you did for the previous portion of the Wizard.  If your email address is 'johndoe@savy2k.net' then your username is 'johndoe'.  Press 'Next' when the information is correctly entered.

Congratulations!  You have now configured your computer to not only dial and connect to Savy2k, but also to send and receive your Savy2k email.  You should now see a window with a check-box to choose if you would like to connect to the internet immediately, and a 'Finish' button.  If you would like to connect to the Internet immediately, make sure there is a check mark in the box by clicking on it, and then press the 'Finish' button.  If you would not like to connect immediately, make sure there is no check mark in the box and press the 'Finish' button.
